The Recreation Ecology Lab, in collaboration with Pitkin County Open Space and Trails, developed a visitor use study to understand human and ecological dimensions of recreation use across the county. Pitkin County, Colorado perhaps better known for its winter recreation, is a popular destination in the summer months because of its incredible mountain scenery and mild temperatures. Pitkin County is also home to the Collegiate Peaks, Holy-Cross, Hunter-Frying Pan, Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness areas which protect important mountain habitat for species which are likely to be highly impacted by climate change.

In 2022 and 2023, the Recreation Ecology Lab operationalized a visitor survey and GPS tacking study to better understand human dimensions of recreation use like motivations, place attachment, behavioral responses to crowding, and evaluations of current conditions. We also asked visitors to carry a GPS unit during their visit to gain an understanding of the extent and spatio-temporal behaviors of visitors. This study will help inform the development of cross-boundary, inter-agency recreation management plans for the Roaring Fork Outdoor Coalition of public land managers.
